"That he was."
"What did they do?"
"The villagers?"
Cyrus sighed. "Yes. The villagers."
"They cut his head off."
"Gross," Cyrus muttered. "Why'd they do it that way?"
"That's the way you do it. You got to remove the werewolf's head while it's a wolf." Kazie saw Cyrus's expression and hurried on. "Don't go giving me those looks, that's the way it works."
"So what happens if you cut off the head when it's a man?"
"Depends. Cut it off and later put it back on the body . . . little while later, he's good as new. Butand it's a big butcut off the head while he's a man and keep the head away from the body . . . the body eventually dies, but head goes right on living. Forever!"
"You mean just the head? God, that's awful."
"That's what happened. First the mob wounded the Hungan with their spears and arrows. Pretty soon it had so many arrows sticking out of it, it looked like a porcupine and was howling and hopping around. The noise brought out the whole village and they surrounded the thing with torches to keep it from running away, and finallywhen it was downthey came after it with knives. The Hungan tried to outsmart them by turning back into a man, but the young chief knew what he was doing and they cut off the head anyway. Then they burned the body and buried the head in the mountains where nobody could find it. Far as I know that man's head is still up therealive. Buried in a dark hole for all eternity."
Cyrus shuddered uncontrollably. "That's horrible. Are you saying that a werewolf doesn't just die after a while like everything else?"
"Nope. They're immortal. Live forever. That's how I knew about youyour hand."
Cyrus looked at his palm and then at Kazie. "I don't get it."
"No life lines. No life lines 'cause your life has no end.
